It is not easy for diabetic patients to carry insulin along on long journeys. However, now scientists have created an insulin that will not require a fridge.

Patients with diabetes who take insulin usually need a freeze to keep it safe. Due to this, it is not easy to carry it with you in long journeys. However, now there is good news for the patients applying insulin. The team of scientists has created such a ‘thermostable’ (safe at room temperature) insulin that will not need to be kept in the fridge.

This research has been prepared by two scientists from Kolkata-based Bose Institute and Indian Institute of Chemical Biology (IICB) in collaboration with two scientists from Hyderabad-based Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT). This research has been prepared by Shubhrangsu Chatterjee of Bose Institute along with IICB scientist Partha Chakravati, besides IICT’s B Jagadish and J Reddy. This research has also been highly praised in the internationally renowned science journal iScience.

You can keep it outside the fridge as long as you want.

According to Shubhrangsu Chatterjee, faculty member of Bose Institute, “You can keep this insulin out of the fridge for as long as you want. It will then become easier for diabetic patients around the world to carry insulin with them.” He also said, “At present we have named it ‘Insulock’. We are soon going to appeal to the Department of Science and Technology (DST) to name it after Acharya Jagdish Chandra Bose.”

Will be safe even at temperatures up to 65 degrees

At present, the insulins that are available in the market have to be kept at a temperature of at least 4 degrees. At the same time, this new insulin will be safe even at temperatures up to 65 degrees. This four-year long research was funded jointly by DST and CSIR.
