From June 15 to September 15, 2025, a major runway 10/28 of the airport will be closed for upgradation. During this time, about 114 flights will be canceled every day and the timing of 43 flights will change, which may cause inconvenience to passengers.
Why is the runway being upgraded?
According to Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, CEO of Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), Runway 10/28 is being upgraded to make flights safe and smooth in future fog season. The upgrade will see the instrument landing system (ILS) being improved and CAT-3B systems being implemented at both ends of the runway. This system will help in safe landing and take-off of aircraft in low visibility, especially in dense winter fog.
How much impact will it have on flights?
The runway closure will affect about 7% of Delhi airport’s total flight capacity. 57 departing flights will be cancelled, while many flights will be rescheduled. DIAL has ensured that the impact of cancellations is limited to 8-9% in sectors where many flights are available. The new schedule has already been published, so that passengers can plan their journey in advance.

Such a situation has happened before
Earlier in April 2025, there was an attempt to close the runway, but it had to be stopped due to huge chaos in the flight schedule. The runway was reopened in May after the intervention of Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu. This time DIAL has planned better than before so that passengers face minimum trouble.
It will be beneficial in the long run
Although this closure will cause temporary inconvenience to the passengers, the runway upgrade will reduce the problem of delays and cancellations of flights in the future winter season to a great extent. DIAL says that this step will make Delhi Airport more reliable and ready for weather challenges.
