Fastag: Government increased fastag deadline, will now be mandatory from February 15

According to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, Fastag has been made mandatory for registration of new four-wheelers from December 1, 2017.

The NHIA has extended the deadline for mandatory fastg to toll collection at toll plazas across the country till 15 February 2021. The first deadline was January 1, 2021. Now the drivers will be able to install fastags in their trains by 15 February 2021. This decision was implemented by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to avoid jams at Darsal toll plazas and promote electronic transactions. But it was not made mandatory. This system was introduced in 2016.




Transaction is mandatory for digital toll collection

At present, its share in electronic transactions on toll plazas has increased from 75 to 80 percent. The highway authority may get regulatory approval for hundred percent cashless toll collection from February 15. When FastG was launched in 2016, four banks issued one lakh tags. Thereafter, seven lakh fastags were released in 2017 and 34 lakh in 2018. The ministry released the information in November this year, making FASTAG mandatory for vehicles older than 2021 or for vehicles before December 1, 2017.

Fastag mandatory for registration of new four-wheelers

According to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, Fastag has been made mandatory for registration of new four-wheelers from December 1, 2017. Apart from this, the fastag of the vehicle concerned is necessary for the fitness certificate of the transport vehicles. Fastag has been made mandatory for vehicles with national permits from October 1, 2019. Fastag is also mandatory for new third party insurance.
