Delhi is essentially being smothered by a “Red Alert” fog system that has brought the city to a standstill. As of Tuesday morning, December 30, 2025, the capital is navigating what might be its worst weather stretch of the year.

The thing is, the “Red Alert” isn’t just for show. Or nothing. Let’s be real, visibility dropped to a terrifying 50 meters at 8 AM. Those too. While it “improved” to 100 meters later, that’s still effectively like driving with a blindfold on.

The Travel Meltdown

If you have a flight or train today, the news is grim.

  • Flight Chaos: At least 118 flights were cancelled this morning, with over 200 delayed. Major hubs like IGI Airport are a sea of stranded passengers.

  • Diversions: 18 flights had to be diverted to other cities because they couldn’t find the runway through the grey wall.

  • Trains: The Delhi Division of Railways reports over 20 Delhi-bound trains are running more than three hours late.

The “Hazardous” Air Bubble

And here’s the kicker: the fog is trapping every bit of toxic exhaust and dust.

  1. Severe Hits: The city average is hovering around 401 (Severe), but local spots are much worse.

  2. Toxic Hotspots: Wazirpur hit 462 and Jahangirpuri hit 464. This is the kind of air that tastes like metallic grit.

  3. The “New Year” Slump: The Early Warning System says it’ll drop back into “Severe” on January 1st. It’s an ongoing situation where transport emissions (15.1%) and industrial smoke are basically baking in a giant fog-oven.

Weather Outlook: A Wet Start to 2026?

The IMD has extended the warning for “dense to very dense fog” through Tuesday afternoon. But look ahead:

  • Jan 1, 2026: A Western Disturbance is moving in. We might actually see light rain on New Year’s Day.

  • The Catch: While rain usually cleans the air, the initial moisture often makes the fog even thicker (smog), potentially wrecking New Year’s Eve visibility tonight.

If you’re commuting, the police have boosted deployments to prevent pile-ups on the highways. Stay off the roads if you can—visibility is shifting minute-by-minute.
