Kolkata. Professor Samantak Das, co-chancellor of Jadavpur University, died under mysterious circumstances. His body was found hanging in his flat on Wednesday afternoon. The police have given information about this incident. When the family members took Samantak Das to Bangur Hospital, the doctors declared him dead.
After this, the police took the body in possession and sent it for post-mortem. At the same time, people around the co-chancellor have come to know that Das was battling depression for the last few days. According to the Indian Express report, university officials said that when Professor Das did not come to his office in the morning, a car was sent to pick him up in connection with some work.
The door of his room was knocked on for a long time but no response was received. Later, when neighbors broke the door, his body was found hanging from the ceiling. An official from Regent’s Park police station said, “We have sent the body for post-mortem. We are also conducting necessary investigation into the matter.” Students and department members gathered on the campus to mourn the death of Samantak Das. Let us tell you that the Vice Chancellor’s wife also committed suicide a few years ago. University Vice Chancellor Suranjan Das said, “The Jadavpur University family today lost one of its most important office bearers who was a prominent face of the institute. His passing is a great loss and has created a void that cannot be filled.
Apart from this, the Students’ Union of Jadavpur University, Faculty of Arts said, “We are deeply saddened by the untimely demise of Professor Samantak Das.” According to media reports, Samantak Das completed his graduation and post-graduation in English literature from Jadavpur University. Earlier, he was associated with the English department of Visva-Rati University at Bolpur-Shantiniketan in Birbhum district. Then in the year 2005, he joined the Department of Comparative Literature of Jadavpur University.
