Now, if you’re going to open your bank’s website, pay close attention, because the addresses of banking websites are no longer the same. Following RBI orders, many banks across the country have changed the domains of their official websites.
In the age of digital banking, cybersecurity and protection against online fraud have become crucial. In a significant move, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has directed all banks nationwide to migrate their net banking websites to a new, exclusive domain: ‘.bank.in.’ This move aims to make online transactions more secure and increase customer confidence.
In a circular issued in April 2025, the RBI stated that to further secure digital banking and prevent incidents like phishing and cyber fraud, banks must now migrate their online platforms to the ‘.bank.in’ domain. This domain is reserved and exclusive for Indian banks only. This means that no fraudulent website or website designed to look like a bank will be able to mislead customers, as the ‘.bank.in’ domain will only be granted to RBI-registered banks.
Which banks have changed their website addresses?
- ICICI Bank : https://www.icici.bank.in/
- HDFC Bank : https://www.hdfc.bank.in/
- Axis Bank : https://www.axis.bank.in/
- Kotak Mahindra Bank : https://www.kotak.bank.in/en/home.html
- Punjab National Bank : https://pnb.bank.in/
- State Bank of India : https://sbi.bank.in/
All banks have assured that their old URLs will continue to work for the time being and will automatically redirect to the new address so that customers do not face any inconvenience.
Why order a domain change?
In its April 21, 2025, circular, the RBI clarified that the move is aimed at strengthening cybersecurity, reducing phishing and online fraud, and increasing public confidence in digital banking. The central bank noted that fraudulent websites often create URLs that resemble those of banks to obtain login details and passwords from customers, causing significant financial losses. The ‘.bank.in’ domain will provide protection against all such cyber threats.
Operation of the domain
The IDRBT has been assigned the responsibility of operating the ‘.bank.in’ domain. This organization operates under the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). The IDRBT is providing complete guidance to banks regarding registration, migration, and security protocols. The RBI has stated that banks should complete this process as quickly as possible so that all bank websites are on the new domain by October 31, 2025.
What next?
The RBI has also indicated that a new exclusive domain called ‘fin.in’ will be launched in the near future, specifically for non-banking financial institutions (NBFCs) and other financial service providers. Customers should ensure they always access their bank’s website through the ‘.bank.in’ domain and avoid logging in through unknown links or emails. While the new domain will help prevent cyber fraud, it’s still important to remain vigilant.
