The AI Arms Race Heats Up
The thing is, this new commitment is massive. It builds on the nearly 40 billion Amazon has already poured into the country since 2010. Amit Agarwal, the Senior VP for Emerging Markets, announced this at the Amazon Smbhav Summit in New Delhi.
This announcement comes right after Microsoft made its own huge move, promising a 17.5 billion investment in India’s AI infrastructure. Amazon’s commitment is essentially double Microsoft’s pledge, showing how critical India is becoming for global tech giants, let’s be real.

The Three Pillars of Investment
Amazon’s funds are focused on India’s national priorities, or nothing. It’s a strategic move to align their growth with the country’s vision of becoming a global AI hub.
The money targets three strategic pillars by 2030:

AI-Driven Digitization: Building up the local AI environment and democratizing access to AI for millions.

Export Growth: They aim to quadruple exports enabled by Amazon from India, pushing the cumulative total to 80 billion.

Job Creation: The plan is expected to generate an additional 1 million direct, indirect, induced, and seasonal jobs in India.
And here’s the kicker: they plan to deliver the benefits of AI to 15 million small businesses, using their fulfillment centers, data centers, and payment infrastructure.
Agarwal said they’re “excited to continue being a catalyst for India’s growth.” The tech companies are all betting that India’s booming digital economy is the single biggest growth market left. The competition to build the foundational cloud and AI infrastructure is fierce, and this 35 billion move confirms Amazon is leading the charge, for now. It’s an ongoing, high-stakes investment game.
