Traveling between T1 and T3 at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport will now be easier with the metro. With this new metro line, international passengers landing at T3 will be able to reach T1 in just 10 minutes and catch their domestic connecting flight.
This line is expected to be completed by 2027. Now the journey of passengers at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport is going to be even easier. Soon the work on a new metro line connecting the airport’s Terminal 1 (T1) to Terminal 3 (T3) may begin. This news is no less than a good news for those passengers who have to travel a long distance from one terminal to another to catch their connecting flight at the same airport.
What is the plan for this new metro line?
This new metro line will enable international passengers arriving at T3 to reach T1 in just 10 minutes to catch their domestic connecting flights. For this facility, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) have jointly prepared a detailed project report (DPR). This new line, named ‘Golden Line’, will connect T1 and Aerocity station.
How will you get the facility?
Currently, T3 is connected to the Airport Express Line, while T1 is connected to the Magenta Line. There is no direct interchange between these two lines. Under the new plan, passengers will take the Airport Express Line from T3 and get down at Aerocity station and then take the Golden Line from there to reach T1 directly.
Waiting for approval and target by 2027
This plan was first proposed in 2023, but work on it could not start then. Now DMRC and DIAL have together prepared a final plan for it. This DPR has got the approval of the Delhi government and now it will be placed before the Union Cabinet after approval from the Urban Development Ministry of the Central Government. According to officials, work on it will start as soon as the cabinet approves it and the target is to complete it by 2027.
This move is being seen as an important step towards making India a major international aviation hub. Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu had also said in January this year that his aim is to establish Delhi as a major international aviation hub in the next two years.
