Air India: Tata group may bid for Air India. The deadline for bidding for Air India is ending today i.e. on Monday. News agency ANI quoted sources as saying that the Tata Group may file Expression of Interest (EOI) for Air India. However, officially no one has said anything about this. Let us tell you that the Tata Group had established this airline in 1932 and it was exited in 1953 67 years ago.

According to sources, the Tata group may use AirAsia as a vehicle in which Tata Sons will have a larger share. As of now, Tata Sons operates Vistara Airlines in association with Singapore Airlines. The last date for bidding for Air India is 14 December and the government has not extended the deadline yet. However, the government has extended the Intimation Date for the bidders for Air India to 5 January, which was earlier till 29 December.

Tata group’s journey with Air India

  • The Tata group started Air India in October 1932 under the name of Tata Airlines. In 1946, Tata Airlines became Air India.
  • The Government of India took Air India under its jurisdiction in 1953, although JRD Tata remained chairman of the company until 1977.
  • In 2013, Tata Group, along with Malaysia’s Air Asia and Singapore Airlines, started 2 airlines named Air Asia India and Vistara.
  • Recently, Tata Sons increased its stake in Air Asia India by 51 per cent, as the Malaysian partner expressed its inability to fund new funds due to its financial troubles.

Spicejet too

It is reported that Ajay Singh of SpiceJet is also eyeing Air India. However, there is no comment from SpiceJet either. Let us know that when the government bid for Air India in 2018, no buyer came forward during that time. Then Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said last year that if Air India is not privatized, it may have to be closed. But now such reports are coming that many people have shown interest in it, including Adani and Hinduja Group.
