In such a situation, if any tax refund is due to the deceased, then make sure that it has been credited in his account i.e. the refund has come in the account. Once the matters related to closure of accounts, income tax returns etc. are settled, his legal heir can hand over the PAN of the deceased person to the Income Tax Department. Before surrendering, all the bank accounts of the deceased should be transferred or closed in the name of another person.

To surrender the PAN card, the representative of the deceased or his legal heir will have to write an application to the assessment officer in whose jurisdiction the PAN card is registered. The application should mention why the PAN card is being surrendered, along with the name, PAN number, date of birth of the deceased and a copy of the death certificate of the deceased. Although it is not mandatory to surrender the PAN card of the deceased, if you feel that you may need it anytime in future, then you can keep it.

What to do with Aadhaar card after death

Aadhar card is an essential document as an identity proof and address proof. Aadhar card is mandatory to take advantage of LPG gas subsidy, scholarship benefits and all other government schemes. Aadhaar is a unique number, so even after death, this number remains present, it cannot be given to anyone else.

Aadhar number is not deactivated

What happens to Aadhaar after death, can it be destroyed or deactivated? In response to this question, the government itself has told in Parliament that after the death of a person, his Aadhaar is not deactivated, because there is no such provision. That is, at present there is no system to cancel the Aadhaar number of a deceased person. The Registrar General of India had sought suggestions from UIDAI on the draft amendments to the Birth and Death Registration Act, 1969. So that the basis of the deceased can be taken while issuing the death certificate.

Link Aadhaar with Death Certificate

There is currently no mechanism to get the Aadhaar number of deceased persons from the registrar for deactivating Aadhaar, but once the framework for sharing of Aadhaar number among these entities is in place, the registrar will contact the UIDAI to deactivate the Aadhaar number of the deceased. Will start sharing with you. Deactivating the Aadhaar or linking it with the death certificate will prevent it from being misused after the death of the Aadhaar owner.
