8th Pay Commission – The month of May is over and after that only 7 months are left for its implementation on the deadline of 1 January 2026.
8th pay commission: The central government approved the 8th Pay Commission in January this year and after that discussions were started with the concerned officials. So that the terms of reference (TOR) could be finalized and the modalities for the potential commission members to start work could be finalized. However, the government has not yet officially announced the appointment of the chairman and other members of the commission. Last month a circular was issued informing about the government’s proposal to fill about 35 posts on deputation basis. Applications were sought from eligible government employees to fill these posts. Since then, there have been several reports in the media speculating about the finalization of the TOR and the appointments of the members.
Will the 8th Pay Commission be able to meet the January 1, 2026 deadline?
The month of May is over and after this, only 7 months are left for its implementation on the deadline of 1 January 2026. The term of the current 7th Pay Commission ends on 31 December 2025. Looking at the progress so far, it is difficult to say whether the government will be able to implement the 8th Pay Commission on time. Looking at the process of previous pay commissions, it usually takes 12 to 18 months to implement the recommendations.
What will be the impact of the delay on government employees retiring on or after 1 January 2026?
In such a situation, the possibility of implementation from 1 January 2026 is less. Now the question arises that if an employee retires on or after 1 January 2026, but the recommendations of the 8th Pay Commission have not been implemented till then, will they get its benefit? The answer is yes. All such employees will also get the benefit of salary revision in the form of arrears. This has happened before as well. There was a delay of about a year at the time of the 7th Pay Commission, but the arrears were given to all the employees and pensioners.
What has happened on the 8th Pay Commission so far?
The Union Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the formation of the 8th Pay Commission on 16 January 2025. Its purpose is to fix the salary and pension of about 50 lakh central employees and 65 lakh pensioners afresh.
