Vinesh Phogat Reverse Retirement: After being disqualified from the gold medal match at the Paris Olympics, Vinesh announced her retirement from wrestling. A day later, she entered politics. Now, Vinesh has said she needs time to reflect on her wrestling career.
Congress MLA and wrestler Vinesh Phogat has made a U-turn on her retirement decision and announced her return to the wrestling mat. Vinesh said on Friday that she will return in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. She officially issued a statement saying that she is returning with new energy. She said, “The fire inside me has never been extinguished.” Vinesh had announced her retirement from wrestling after being disqualified in the gold medal match in the Paris Olympics. A day after this, she entered politics. Now Vinesh said that she needs time to reflect on her wrestling career.
“People kept asking me if Paris was the end of my career. For a long time, I didn’t have an answer. I needed to step away from the mat, from the pressure, from the expectations, even from my own ambitions. For the first time in years, I allowed myself to breathe easy,” she said.
Vinesh’s comeback message
“I took time to understand the significance of my journey – the highs, the heartbreaks, the sacrifices, and the sides of me the world has never seen. And it was in this introspection that I realised the truth – I still love this sport. I still want to compete,” Vinesh wrote in a post on Friday.

She added, “In that silence, I realized something I had forgotten—that passion never ends. It was just drowned out by the fatigue and noise. The discipline, the routine, the struggle… it’s all ingrained in me. No matter how far I go, a part of me always remains on the mat.”
Vinesh further declared, “So here I am, heading towards LA28 with a fearless mind and determination. And this time I am not alone, my son is joining my team, my biggest inspiration, my little cheerleader on this journey to the LA Olympics.”
What happened to Vinesh in Paris?
Asian Games gold medallist Vinesh Phogat created history by becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to reach the Olympic gold medal bout. Her landmark achievement included a stunning win over four-time world champion Yui Susaki of Japan, setting up a thrilling final for India and ensuring at least a silver medal. But just hours before the final, tragedy struck. During the morning routine weigh-in, Vinesh was found to be 100 grams overweight and was disqualified from the competition.
According to United World Wrestling (UWW) rules, failing to measure weight at any stage of a competition invalidates all previous results. Vinesh appealed the decision, arguing that she deserved at least the silver medal she earned after winning three bouts on the first day. However, the Court of Arbitration for Sport rejected her appeal, leaving her without a medal despite her historic performance.
