The wait for clarity is over for the nearly 10 lakh aspirants who appeared for the 2025 cycle. On Tuesday, March 10, 2026, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) published the official cut-off scores for the Preliminary, Mains, and Final stages. These numbers offer a sobering look at the rising competitiveness of the exam, with the Prelims cut-off returning to the 90s range after a two-year dip.

Category-Wise Comparison Table

Category Prelims (GS-1) Mains (Written) Final (Total)
General 92.66 739 963
EWS 89.34 706 926
OBC 92.00 717 931
SC 84.00 700 905
ST 82.66 694 902

Reality Check

The 92.66 Prelims cut-off indicates a moderate-difficulty paper, a shift from the exceptionally tough 2023-24 cycle where scores plummeted to the 70s. Still, the gap between the General and OBC final cut-off is narrowing (only 32 marks), suggesting that competition within reserved categories is intensifying. In fact, if your score in the 2025 Mains was below 700, the data shows that even a “perfect” interview wouldn’t have been enough to bridge the gap to the General final list.

The Loopholes

The Commission says CSAT is “qualifying.” In fact, this is a “Hidden Filter Loophole”—while the GS-1 cut-off is 92.66, thousands of candidates who scored 100+ in GS-1 failed to qualify because they fell short of the 66.67 mark in CSAT. Therefore, the “true” difficulty of the exam is often hidden by the qualifying paper. Still, the “Tie-Breaking Loophole” remains; if two candidates have the same total marks, the UPSC prioritizes the one with higher marks in the Compulsory Papers and the Personality Test, followed by the older candidate.

What This Means for You

If you are an aspirant for 2026, target 100+ in Prelims mock tests. First, realize that the 92.66 benchmark proves that “playing it safe” with low attempts is no longer a viable strategy. Then, if you are preparing for Mains, understand that 740+ is the absolute floor for a General category call; you should aim for 800+ to ensure a top-rank service like IAS or IFS.

Finally, understand that your scorecard will be live by March 20. You should download it immediately to identify whether your weakness lies in the Optional subject or the Ethics paper. Before you commit to a new coaching program, check the “Official Answer Key” (usually released with the cut-offs) to see where your logic diverged from the Commission’s.

What’s Next

The UPSC CSE 2026 notification is expected shortly, with the Prelims likely scheduled for May/June 2026. Then, look for the Detailed Application Form (DAF-1) for the 2025 reserve list candidates. Finally, expect the marks of non-recommended candidates to be visible on the UPSC portal until mid-April.
