The government had exempted the custom duty for a year on the open sale. It will end on September 30.

From October 1, the government will impose 5% custom duty on the import of open sale television. This can increase the price of TV. The government has decided to take this step to promote local manufacturing with value addition. Open cell is used in TV manufacturing. This is its main component.

Government officials said that this would not increase TV prices too much, as the industry is anticipating. Due to this duty, the price of TV will not increase more than Rs 250.

A finance ministry official said, “Major companies are importing open cells for 32-inch TVs at a price of Rs 2,700.” For a 42-inch TV, it is about Rs 4,000 to Rs 4,500. In this way, the impact of 5 percent duty on open sale will not exceed Rs 150-250. ”

On the other hand, television makers have said that the prices of fully made panels have increased by 50 percent. 5 percent duty on open cell will increase the price of 32 inch TV by at least 600 rupees. For 42 inch TVs, this increase can be between 1200-1500 rupees. It is expected to be more for big screen TVs.

The government had exempted the custom duty for a year on the open sale. It will end on September 30. The decision on exemption in custom duty was taken so that the domestic industry is not limited to just assembling, but does value addition. However, this could not happen.

Another official said that the domestic industry should invest more in local manufacturing. Adequate measures have been taken to save him. Since 2017, there is a 20 per cent custom duty on imports of fully manufactured TVs. Apart from this, imports of certain types of TVs have been kept in the banned category since July this year. Till last year, TVs worth Rs 7,000 crore were being imported. The official said that the assembly of the TV cannot be prolonged. This does not cause any value addition.
