As soon as the winter cold sets in, the railway’s speed slows. Every year, dense fog complicates train operations. Passengers waiting at stations swell, and sometimes trains remain undetected for hours.
Poor visibility during this season can cause trains to be delayed or even cancelled. Every year, the railways try to adopt new technologies to address this problem, but fog remains a significant challenge. This time too, the increasing cold has disrupted the timetables of many trains.
Some trains are being cancelled, while others have been temporarily suspended. The railways have promised alternative arrangements to avoid inconvenience to passengers, but the wait for travel remains difficult.
Signal problems in the fog
Like every year, the Railways has deployed modern technology and safety equipment to combat foggy weather, reducing train delays and cancellations. However, dealing with dense fog remains a significant challenge for the Railways. Despite spending millions of rupees, trains fail to run on time, and passengers face the inconvenience of cancellations and delays.
Many trains will remain closed from December to February
If you’re planning to travel by train in the coming months, this news is important for you. The Railways has also decided to temporarily suspend some trains during the winter season. Several long-distance trains will be suspended from December 1, 2025, to February 28, 2026. This includes the Jalandhar-Delhi Superfast Express, a major train on the Saharanpur-Delhi route, which will remain suspended until March 1, 2026.
Passenger safety care
This decision by the Railways has been taken with passenger safety in mind, to avoid accidents during fog. However, this will undoubtedly cause inconvenience to passengers, especially those who have already booked tickets. Senior Superintendent of Saharanpur Station, A.K. Tyagi, stated that the Railways is preparing to make alternative arrangements for the convenience of passengers, so that their travel is minimally affected.
