TRAI releases 2 new mobile number series for calling and SMS, know here

TRAI New Mobile Call SMS Series: A new number series has been released by government bodies TRAI and DoT for mobile calling and messaging. Also, the government can issue new regulations for OTT apps. Apart from this, the government is preparing to tighten the noose on messaging platforms like WhatsApp.

The government has released a new number series for promotional calls and messages along with bank message calls, which is going to provide a lot of relief to mobile users in the coming days. Because till now users were not able to differentiate between promotional calls and messages. In such a situation, the government has allotted a separate series for promotional calls and messages. Besides, new rules are also being made for the convenience of mobile users, which can be issued under the 100-day action plan after the formation of the new government.

Government released new number series

Department of Telecommunications i.e. DoT and Telecom Regulatory Authority of India TRAI have jointly released a new mobile number series. Under which promotional voice calling messages will come from 140 mobile number series, while financial transactions and service voice calls will come from 160 number series. It is expected that in the coming days, these number series will be implemented across the country by telecom operators Jio, Airtel and Vodafone-Idea, after which promotional and banking messages will be issued from these two mobile number series. With this, users will be able to identify which are promotional and banking messages. The government believes that this will help in stopping mobile fraud.

Flood of phishing messages in India

According to the report, there has been a flood of fake and promotional calls and messages in India. Every mobile user receives about 20 to 25 promotional calls and messages a day. According to statistics, 120 to 150 million phishing messages are sent monthly to mobile users in India. One out of every 12 people falls prey to phishing every month. Approximately 300,000 people fall victim to fraud, but only 35,000–45,000 report these incidents.

Apart from this, there are preparations to crack down on those making fake calls and messages through social media platforms like WhatsApp. Both TRAI and DoT have together made a plan to regulate OTT platforms. For this, suggestions will be sought from OTT players for making a draft. Also, to prevent online fraud, the government is rolling out blockchain based solution and Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT).
