TRAI new calling service: If you are troubled by calls coming from unknown or fake numbers, then this news can be important for you. Actually, TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) and DoT (Department of Telecommunications) are going to implement such a system under which now you will not only see the number of the fake caller on your mobile screen but the name of that person will also be shown on your screen. Just like Truecaller tells you about any call as soon as it comes. But this time you will not need any third party app.
Curbing fraud and fake calls
Under this new system by TRAI and DoT, only the name that the user has registered for their mobile number in KYC will be displayed. This will curb fraud and fake calls. Furthermore, this feature will be active by default, although users will be able to deactivate it if they wish. It’s worth noting that this service was trialed last year in the Mumbai and Haryana circles.
TRAI had proposed CNAP in 2024
In fact, in February 2024, TRAI proposed a service called ‘Calling Name Presentation (CNAP).’ It stated that this feature would only be enabled if customers requested it. Following this, DoT recommended that TRAI enable this feature by default for all users. However, anyone who wishes can also request to disable this service. Currently, TRAI has agreed with DoT’s views.
Who will get the exemption?
This exemption will be available to those who have taken the Calling Line Identification Restriction (CLIR) feature; their names will not appear on the screen. This exemption will be specifically granted to intelligence agencies, VIPs, and select individuals. However, anyone applying for CLIR will be thoroughly vetted and only then will they be eligible for this feature.
