It is probably the most expensive vegetable in the country. It is sold only in the month of Sawan. That too in two states of the country, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. Its name is different in both places. The name of this vegetable is Khukhadi. Its price is 1200 rupees per kg. But as soon as it comes in the market, this vegetable is sold hands-on. Protein is found in excessive quantity in this vegetable. (Photo: rooparoop.blogspot.com)

In Chhattisgarh, it is called Khukdi. In Jharkhand, it is called Rugda. They are both a species of mushroom. This vegetable is khukri (mushroom), which grows naturally in the forest. This vegetable has to be cooked within two days, otherwise it becomes useless. In the forest of Korba district adjoining Udaipur, including Balrampur, Surajpur, Surguja, Chhattisgarh, a natural dryness occurs during the rainy day.

The demand for khukri, which grows for two months, becomes so much that the villagers living in the forest store it. In other urban areas including Ambikapur in Chhattisgarh, middlemen buy it at a low price and sell it from Rs 1000 to Rs 1200 per kg. It supplies about five quintals in Ambikapur market daily during the season.

Khukri is a type of white mushroom. There are many species and varieties of khukdi. Long stalked sorva khukdi is more preferred. It is colloquially called Bhudu Khukdi. Bhudu means earthen house or mound built by termites, where it grows in rain. It increases immunity in the body.

In the holy month of Sawan, a large population of Jharkhand stops eating chicken and mutton for a month. In such a situatio

n, khukdi coming from remote areas becomes a better alternative to chicken and mutton. Just a little more pockets have to be loosened. In Ranchi it is sold at a price of 700 to 800 rupees per kg.

Apart from vegetable, it is also used in making medicines. It is believed that the earth bursts due to lightning during the rainy season. At this time, white colored khukdi comes out from inside the earth. Shepherds who feed on cattle are well tested for khukri. They also know at which place khukdi can be found.
