Anyone who messages unknown women after 11 p.m. can be charged under several sections of the IPC. Men who send flirtatious messages to women can be charged under Section 79 of the Criminal Procedure Code (BNS) for insulting the modesty of a woman. Previously, this was punishable under Section 509 of the Indian Penal Code. Furthermore, Sections 67 and 67A of the IT Act state that sending obscene messages or photographs to a woman after 11 p.m. is considered sexual harassment. The accused can be severely punished and fined.
