Have you heard about SIM swap fraud? A scam that targets mobile phone users. Now the Department of Telecom has made a new rule related to SMS to prevent this fraud. Telecom operators like Jio, Airtel, Vi and BSNL have to follow this rule. Under this, whenever the operator issues a new SIM, the incoming and outgoing services of SMS will be stopped for the first 24 hours. It is believed that this decision will help in preventing SIM swap fraud.

Before moving on to the news, let us know about SIM swap fraud. This fraud is done with those people, whose personal details reach the fraudsters. After getting the personal information of the user, the fraudsters contact the telecom operator and ask for a new SIM. The same sim that the user is using. As soon as the new SIM card is released, the SIM running in the user’s phone stops. After this, all the details start coming in the new sim, which is with the fraudsters.

You must be wondering how the personal information of the customer reaches the fraudsters. For this phishing link is used. This link can be sent to you as an SMS or even on e-mail. When the fraudsters confirm that they have got the personal details of a person, then they demand a new SIM in place of the old SIM running in his name.

It is a matter of concern that OTPs also start reaching the fraudsters. Financial fraud can be carried out by using them. To stop this fraud, the Telecom Department has brought out a new rule. according to information For this, telecom operators have got 15 days time. It has been said that on receiving the request to upgrade the new SIM or number, the telecom companies will have to inform the users about it. Calling will have to confirm that the user only wants to upgrade to a new SIM or number.

If the customer refuses, then the telecom companies will have to stop the process immediately. Due to this, the new SIM with the user’s number will not be able to reach the fraudsters.
