India is set to introduce chip-based e-passports this year. It is designed to strengthen security and speed up immigration checks. The new passport will have biometric details and will comply with ICAO standards.
Passport Seva Programme 2.0 has been implemented across the country, incorporating advanced and emerging technologies to enhance transparency and speed up operations. Global Passport Seva Programme 2.0 is under testing and will be gradually implemented in Indian Embassies and Consulates in several phases.
What is an e-passport?
An e-passport is a contactless chip, usually installed in the back cover or front cover. With its help, immigration and travel process at the airport becomes very easy. You can identify an e-passport by the golden chip logo printed on its front cover.

How to apply for an e-passport?
- – First of all, go to the official website of Passport Seva.
- – Create a new user profile or log in here.
- – After this, fill the e-passport application form.
- – Now select your nearest Passport Seva Kendra or Passport Seva Kendra.
- – Pay the prescribed application fee online.
- – Book an appointment at the selected service center.
- – Visit the Passport Seva Kendra on the scheduled date for biometric capture and document verification.
