This hallmarking process will be exactly like the hallmarking that was started earlier for gold jewellery. These new rules to be implemented by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) will make it even easier for customers to identify the purity and quality of silver jewellery. These new rules will help in controlling the trend of fake and fraudulent jewellery. Along with this, customers will be able to get pure and quality jewellery.

Silver will have 6 new hallmarks
According to the news published in Economic Times, 6 standard standards have been prepared by the Bureau of Indian Standards to check the purity of silver. Through these standards, it will be possible to find out how much percent of silver is pure. Under the new system, BIS has fixed a total of six purity levels for silver. This includes the level of 900, 800, 835, 925, 970 and 990. Let us know what each level means…
Numbers 1 – 990
If the number 900 is written on any silver jewellery, it means that it is the purest form of silver. This number means that the silver is 99 percent pure. Such silver is also called fine silver. Such silver is used in the form of bars or coins. It is very soft, hence it is rarely used in jewellery.
2 – 970 numbers
If the number 970 is written on any silver jewellery, it means that this jewellery is 97 percent pure. Such silver is used in making jewellery and utensils.
3 – 925 number
This number means that the silver is 92.5% pure. This silver is also called sterling silver. Such silver is considered better for making jewelry.
4 – 900 numbers
When the number 900 is written on any silver jewellery, it is believed that the silver is 90 percent pure. This type of silver is used in some jewellery and silver coins.
5 – 835 numbers
This number means that the purity of silver is 83.5 percent. In such a situation, if the number 835 is written on the silver jewellery, then understand how much percent pure it is.
6 – 800 numbers
If the number 800 is written on any silver jewellery, then it is considered that the silver is 80% pure. The amount of other materials like copper in it is only 20%.
