The RBI made a major announcement at the Global Fintech Fest 2025. The RBI has launched an offline digital rupee (e₹). The advantage of this new launch is that it will allow you to make digital payments without the need for internet or mobile network.
This new feature from the RBI will make digital transactions completely cashless. You can store them in your digital wallet like cash and spend them easily without accessing your bank account.
What is Offline Digital Rupee (e₹)?
Digital Rupee or e₹ is India’s Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), which you can call the ‘digital avatar’ of the Indian Rupee.
- Will be used like cash: It is just like the cash kept in your purse, but it will be in your wallet in digital form.
- Will work in offline mode: The biggest feature is that it will work offline.
- This is how the payment will be made: To make the payment, you just have to scan the QR code or just tap and your payment will be done successfully.
- How to download: Users can download it from Google Play Store or Apple Play Store, register themselves and then make payments to any person or business.
Who will benefit the most?
This move of RBI will benefit the people most who live in rural and remote areas, where internet and mobile network connectivity is a big problem.
Offline Pay: This “Offline Pay” feature of e₹ will leverage NFC-based payment technology and support from telecom companies. Money transactions will now be seamless even when network connectivity is low, promoting financial inclusion.
