Railways To The Rescue: The Capacity Surge

0

The national transporter didn’t wait around. They’ve augmented a serious number of trains and trips to absorb the massive, sudden passenger traffic from the cancelled flights.

The core number? 37 trains augmented with a total of 116 additional coaches, running 114 augmented trips across India.

This is a deep dive into the system, not just an announcement. They’re adding capacity where it matters most, targeting the busiest sectors like Delhi-Mumbai and Chennai-South India.

 Zone-By-Zone Augmentations (Field Notes)

  • Southern Railway (SR): Highest number of augmentations. They hit $18$ trains. Adding Sleeper Class and Chair Car coaches, especially on those crucial high-demand routes. That starts today, December 6.

  • Northern Railway (NR): They added coaches to eight trains. Crucially, they’re adding 3AC coaches to premium trains like the Jammu and Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express, and AC Chair Car coaches to the Chandigarh and Amritsar Shatabdi Express. Gotta put people on those fast tracks.

  • Western Railway (WR): Four major, high-demand trains got extra 3AC and 2AC coaches. Think the major corridors between the West and the Capital.

  • East Central Railway (ECR): They reinforced the Rajendra Nagar–New Delhi service. That’s a key Bihar–Delhi route. Added 2AC coaches for five trips between Dec $6$ and 10.

  • East Coast Railway (ECOR): Bhubaneswar–New Delhi services also beefed up with extra 2AC coaches. Odisha connectivity, those too.

  • Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR): They boosted two important trains with 3AC and Sleeper coaches, running extra trips until Dec 13. Ensuring that connectivity doesn’t break down up in the Northeast.

Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay, the Chief Public Relations Officer for Northern Railway, confirmed they are monitoring the situation. And here’s the kicker: they might even run special fully air-conditioned trains on several routes if the need escalates further. That’s the kind of contingency planning that hits different during a crisis.

The situation is very much ongoing. IndiGo says things should stabilize, but for now, the Railways are the primary, dependable lifeline.

End….
