Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav, in a special conversation with Aaj Tak, has denied the news of charging more fare for extra luggage in the railways like air passengers. He clearly said that for decades there is a rule that how much weight can a passenger carry with him, no new rule has been made. He said that this does not mean that more fare is charged if the weight is more than that.
There is no rule like air travel in railways
Earlier it was reported that Indian Railways is now going to implement rules for luggage like air travel, under which extra fare will be charged according to the luggage if you carry more luggage during the journey. It was said in the reports that this rule already exists, but now it will be implemented with full strictness. Under this rule, luggage up to the prescribed weight can be carried free of cost, but if you carry more luggage than that, you will have to pay extra fare.
It was told in the report that according to this rule, luggage is allowed to be carried without any extra fare according to different bogie categories of travel. For example, those traveling in first class AC coaches will be allowed to carry up to 70 kg of luggage. For AC second class passengers, this limit will be 50 kg and for third AC and sleeper class passengers, the limit will be up to 40 kg. Similarly, passengers traveling on general tickets will be allowed to carry only 35 kg of luggage with them.
The weight and size of the luggage will not be checked
Earlier reports had also stated that just like airports, a facility of pre-booking luggage has been started at railway stations. If the bag or briefcase weighs more than the prescribed limit, then there is a provision to impose a fine on such passengers. It was also stated that electronic luggage machines will also be installed at railway stations to enforce the rule. The weight and size of the passengers’ bags will be checked before entry on the railway platform. This means that not only the weight of the passengers’ luggage, but also the size of their travel bags will be kept within this limit.
Reports said that if more than the prescribed limit and unbooked luggage is found during inspection, a higher fare than normal will be charged. Passengers will be allowed to carry only up to 10 kg of extra luggage with them, luggage weighing more than that will have to be booked in advance. However, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has now directly denied these reports.
During the interview, on the opposition’s allegations of running 12 thousand special trains on Diwali-Chhath in view of the elections in Bihar, the Railway Minister said that Diwali and Chhath are big festivals and lakhs of people go to their homes, last year seven thousand special trains were arranged. A large number of trains were run during Maha Kumbh.
He said that there are elections in Maharashtra, there too about 400 special trains were run during Ganpati festival. The Railway Minister said that we run trains not by looking at the election states but to provide convenience to our passengers.
