Every day lakhs of passengers travel from one place to another with the help of Indian Railways. Railways also constantly upgrades its services for them. Similarly, IRCTC also makes new rules and relaxes the old rules. However, still many passengers keep complaining of various kinds. Similarly, senior citizens complain that they do not get lower berths easily. Let’s know about it.

Recently a Twitter user tweeted that I had booked a ticket for my uncle for yesterday evening (PNR 2448407929) in which I opted for lower berth in first preference as he gave the option of upper or middle berth. I can’t travel. But despite this, I got the upper berth.

In response to this tweet, IRCTC explained why that person did not get the lower berth. IRCTC said in a tweet, ‘Sir, PNR no. 2448407929 is booked under general quota. You can give preference to the lower berth in the general quota but the allotment of berths is subject to availability. After that you have to select “Reservation Option Book only if the lower berth is allotted.”

In another tweet, IRCTC further wrote, “Please note that the allotment of lower berths in general quota is purely subject to availability and there is no human intervention. Also, you can approach the On Duty TTE which is authorized to provide vacant lower berths to the needy.

As per rules, six lower berths in sleeper class and 3 lower berths in AC-3 tier and AC-2 tier class have been fixed in all trains having sleeper class reserved for senior citizens.

At the same time, if any of the lower berths are vacant after the departure of the train, then on the request of any disabled person, senior citizen or pregnant woman, who has got upper or middle berth, it can be given to them. On-board ticket checking staff by making necessary changes in the chart. Seats can be allotted below.
