Punjab News: Rs 11,560 crore has been announced for the development of agriculture sector, apart from this, 16 medical colleges have also been announced in the budget.



Punjab Budget: Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema presented the first budget of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government of the state on Monday. Only 30 months after coming to power, the government got a chance to present the budget. According to its election promise, the government announced to provide 300 units of free electricity every month in the budget. Apart from this, the government has also increased the budget for education.

Know the major announcements of the budget

  • In his budget speech, Finance Minister Cheema said that in the next 5 years, the Bhagwant Mann government will establish 16 medical colleges covering every corner of the state. With this, the total number of medical colleges here will increase to 25.
  • One super specialty hospital each will be set up in Patiala and Faridkot by 2024. Three more colleges will be opened in 2027.
  • 11,560 crore was announced for the development of agriculture sector. With this, Cheema said that Rs 6,947 crore would be spent to provide free electricity to agricultural tube wells.
  • Roof top solar system will be installed in government schools at a cost of 100 crores. A trust, called ‘Punjab Sikhya Te Sehat Fund’, will help build capital assets in the health and education sectors during the year.
  • 200 crore allocated for the solution of stubble burning.
  • The government will constitute a special commission, which will include only traders and businessmen, to make policies as per the wishes of the business community. The body will cooperate with the government in decision making and policy making.
  • Rs 30 crore has been allocated to set up cyber control rooms in all districts to maintain law and order. CCTV cameras will be installed in Police Mahila Mitra Kendras during the financial year 2022-23.
  • In order to create new opportunities in the sub-hill Kandi region, it is proposed to develop a highway from Chandigarh to Pathankot along Shivalik.
  • This year 117 ‘mohalla clinics’ will be set up, out of which 75 will be operational by August 15. Initially, a provision of 77 crores has been kept for this.
  • Like Delhi, ‘Farishte’ scheme will be implemented in Punjab. Under this, any person being a victim of a road accident can reach any hospital in the state. The injured will get free treatment, whose entire cost will be borne by the government.
