Minister of State for Finance Bhagwant Kishanrao Karad said last month, “Boards of individual banks may decide to waive penalty on accounts that have been levied for non-maintenance of minimum balance.” Karad told reporters, “Banks are independent bodies. They have boards that can take a decision on waiving the fine.

This answer came when the minister was talking on a question. He was asked whether the Center would consider directing banks not to levy any penalty on accounts where the balance falls below the prescribed minimum level.
