Key Facts about India’s New Parliament House

NEW DELHI: PM Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone of the New Parliament Building on Thursday, nearly a hundred years after the foundation for the existing Parliament was laid by Duke of Connaught on February 12, 1921.

The construction of existing Parliament, then known as the Council House, had taken nearly six years. The new one will take about two years and the government plans to hold the winter session of 2022 in the new building, coinciding with 75 years of independence.

“Construction of the extant Parliament House, one of the most magnificent buildings in the country, was done under the supervision of renowned architects Sir Edward Lutyens and Sir Herbert Baker,” the Lok sabha secretariat said. The opening ceremony for the building was performed on January 18, 1927 by the then Viceroy of India Lord Irwin.
