The student who committed suicide in Odisha after being hurt by sexual harassment and no action being taken on the allegations, died during treatment. She was fighting for life and death for three days. CM Majhi has expressed grief over the death of the student. He has also said that no accused will be spared in the case. Everyone will get severe punishment.

The student who committed suicide after being upset by sexual harassment in Fakir Mohan Autonomous College in Balasore, Odisha, died. She breathed her last in AIIMS Bhubaneswar late on Monday night. The student was brought to AIIMS in a 95 percent burnt condition. Where she was treated for three days, but despite lakhs of efforts, she could not be saved. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has expressed grief over her death.

CM Majhi said – this is sad, the culprits will get the harshest punishment

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed grief over the death of the victim of the Balasore student self-immolation case. He tweeted and said that I am deeply saddened to hear the news of the death of the student of FM Autonomous College. Despite the government taking all the responsibilities and the tireless efforts of the expert medical team, the life of the victim could not be saved. I pray for the peace of her departed soul and pray to Lord Jagannath to give strength to her family to bear this irreparable loss. I assure the family of the deceased student that all the culprits in this case will get the harshest punishment according to the law. For this, I have personally issued instructions to the officials. The government stands fully with the family.

Death occurred at around 11:45 pm

Odisha Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida gave information about this. She had reached AIIMS Bhubaneswar. She told that the victim died at around 11:45 pm. The doctors were trying their best to save her for the last three days. The government will take strict action against those involved.

BJD workers are protesting

At the same time, tension has increased after the death of the victim of the Balasore student self-immolation case. Workers of the opposition BJD have come out in protest. When the victim’s body was being taken to the AIIMS postmortem centre, BJD workers protested.

Self-immolation was done on July 12

It is worth mentioning that a second year student of the Integrated B.Ed programme of Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College, Balasore set herself on fire on Saturday, July 12, demanding action against the HOD accusing him of sexual harassment. The student had alleged that the teacher had sexually and mentally harassed her.

Before the incident, the student had lodged a complaint with Principal Dilip Ghosh, but he asked her to withdraw the complaint. Principal Dilip Ghosh himself had accepted this. He had said, ‘The student came to me and wanted action against the teacher. I explained to her, as she was under stress. She had lodged a complaint on June 30 and the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) was investigating.’

Principal and Assistant Professor suspended

After the student committed suicide, the Higher Education Department of the Odisha government suspended Assistant Professor (Stage-I) of the Department of Educational Studies, Sameera Kumar Sahu, on the basis of prima facie evidence of the case. Apart from this, Assistant Professor and Principal of FM (Auto) College, Balasore, Dilip Kumar Ghosh has also been suspended. The letter reads, ‘The government believes that Dilip Kumar Ghosh has not handled the matter properly. He has not discharged his duties as the Principal of the college. He is suspended with immediate effect under sub-rule (2) of Rule 12 of the Odisha Civil Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules, 1962.’

Later, the Higher Education Department of Odisha on Saturday constituted a committee to thoroughly investigate the alleged harassment case against Assistant Professor Sameera Kumar Sahu of FM Auto College. Sahu was arrested by the Balasore Police. Apart from this, suspended principal of FM College Dilip Ghosh was also arrested on Monday in view of widespread protests in the state. He was produced in the SDJM court from where he was sent to judicial custody.

President Murmu had met

President Draupadi Murmu also visited the burn unit of AIIMS Bhubaneswar on Monday and inquired about the health of the 20-year-old college student. Odisha Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan were also present with the President. The President also met the family members of the student. The student’s brother said, the President expressed concern over the incident and became emotional. She told us that we should pray to Lord Jagannath. She said that when my sister gets well, she will do something for her.
