Toll tax collection with Number Plate: The central government is now considering abolishing the toll plaza on the highway. Instead, camera-based toll collection system will be implemented. Under this process, toll will be deducted directly from the bank account by scanning the number plates of the vehicles.

Automatic Number Plate Reader: Soon the method of collecting toll tax is going to change in the country. Currently, FASTag is being used across the country for toll collection. However, the central government is now considering abolishing the toll plaza on the highway. Instead, camera-based toll collection system will be implemented. Under this process, toll will be deducted directly from the bank account by scanning the number plates of the vehicles. These cameras will be known as Automatic Number Plate Reader (ANPR) cameras.

Why the toll tax system is being changed
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) claims that by installing these cameras, the waiting period of vehicles at the toll plaza will be reduced. At present, about 97 percent toll collection in the country is being done through FASTag, yet the toll plazas get jammed. So let’s know about this soon to be implemented toll collection system:

How will ANPR work?
The Road Ministry says that toll plazas will be removed from all the highways across the country. ANPR will be installed in place of toll plaza, which will read the number plate of the vehicle and deduct toll tax from the bank account. Cameras will be installed at the entry and exit points of the highway. The system will find out the address distance by taking the picture of the number plate and toll tax will be collected accordingly.

Pilot project being run
Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari had told in September that the government is running a pilot project for its testing. This system will also have the advantage that toll will be taken on the basis of distance from the vehicles. According to Gadkari, this new technology can provide two benefits – unhindered movement of traffic at toll booths and payment according to usage.
