new Delhi: Liquor shops will no longer be able to offer liquor at a discount in Delhi. The Delhi government issued an order in this regard on Monday. The Excise Commissioner of Delhi issued an order saying that now the shopkeepers will not give any concession rebate or discount on the MRP of liquor.

The order said that the government had allowed the discount so that the customer could get the choice and at the same time the right price could be reached through healthy competition in the market. The kind of discount given was not the intention of the government.

He said, “Liquor shopkeepers also promoted this on social media. Also banners and hoardings were also put up which was not allowed.”

Shopkeepers in Delhi were giving discounts on liquor. Due to the discount on liquor, there was a crowd outside the shops and there was also a problem of law and order.

Earlier, on February 15, the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) had warned liquor vendors against crowding at liquor shops amid the Corona epidemic. The DDMA had said that the license can be canceled if the liquor shops do not follow the corona rules.

In recent times, many areas of Delhi witnessed long queues of drinkers at liquor shops as some shops offered discounts on different brands of liquor. Liquor shops in several other areas, including Jahangirpuri, Shahdara and Mayur Vihar in the capital, had offered discounts of up to 35 per cent on certain brands.

An employee of a liquor shop in East Delhi said that liquor shops have to exhaust their stock by the end of March as the license will be renewed in the new financial year. He said, “There are also some brands which are not sold. Retailers are offering discounts and special offers on these like ‘buy one, get one free’. Efforts are on to clear the stock in this manner.”
