New Passport System: EU has launched a new digital entry-exit system, with changes for Indian travelers

Europe’s New Passport System: If you’re planning a trip to Europe, there’s a big update for you. The European Union (EU) has finally officially launched its Exit System (EES). This is a new digital border control system that will gradually eliminate the passport stamping process. Let’s explain what this new system is and what its impact will be.

What is EES and why is it important?

The Entry/Exit System (EES) is a centralized, automated platform designed to record and track the movements of non-European citizens within the Schengen Area. It is one of the largest border control reforms undertaken by the EU in decades. Now, every time a non-EU traveler enters or exits the Schengen Zone, their information will be digitally logged.

The system will record biometric and personal data, such as fingerprints, photographs, and passport details. This will make it easier for authorities to determine how long a traveler has stayed in the Schengen area and whether they have overstayed their visa. The EU’s goal with the new system is to reduce identity fraud at borders and prevent terrorists and illegal immigrants from entering the Schengen area.

To whom will this new system be applicable?

The EES applies to all non-EU citizens entering the Schengen Area, including Indian travelers. The Schengen Zone currently comprises 29 countries. The system will not apply to some travelers, including EU citizens, citizens of Ireland and Cyprus, Vatican City passport holders, and non-EU citizens traveling for study or research. Children under 12 will not be required to provide fingerprints.

What is the new process for passengers?

The registration process under the EES is free and does not require prior registration. Travelers must register at self-service kiosks installed at airports, train stations, and border crossings. They must scan their passport, submit fingerprints, and have their photo taken. The system will automatically record the date, time, and location of entry and exit.

Travelers who refuse to provide biometric data will be barred from entering the Schengen Area. Once inside the Schengen Area, no re-registration is required when traveling between member countries.
