National Mathematics Day: National Mathematics Day is celebrated every year on 22 December on the occasion of the birth anniversary of the great mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. Learn its history and importance here.

National Mathematics Day is celebrated every year on 22 December. This mathematician is celebrated on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan. Former Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, announced the National Mathematics Day in 2012 at an event organized in Chennai to mark the 125th anniversary of the great mathematician Srinivasa Iyengar Ramanujan. Since then, National Mathematics Day in India is celebrated every 22 December by organizing various educational programs in schools and universities across the country.

Ramanujan was born on 22 December 1887 in Madras. He majored in trigonometry at the age of 12. He is also called the mathematician of mathematicians. He died of tuberculosis at the age of 32. He gave about 3500 mathematical formulas to the world.

The main objective behind celebrating this day is to raise awareness among people about the importance of mathematics for the development of humanity. Ramanujan did not get any special training in mathematics, yet he made profound contributions in the areas of analysis and number theory. With his talent and dedication, he not only made amazing innovations in the field of Mathematics but also gave India an incomparable pride. He learned mathematics by himself and compiled 3,884 theorems of mathematics throughout his life. Most of these theorems have been proved correct.

This was how Ramanujan’s style of work

Ramanujan and most of the work done by him still remains an enigma for scientists. The old register on which he used to write his theorems and formulas was found in the library of Trinity College in 1976. This register of about one hundred pages still remains a puzzle for scientists. This register was later known as Ramanujan’s note book. It has also been published by the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai. Like Ramanujan’s researches, his style of working in mathematics was also bizarre. He sometimes woke up in the middle of the night by writing mathematics formulas on the slate and then falling asleep. In this way it seemed that they were solving mathematics questions even in their dreams.
