Mumbai Local Trains: Keeping in mind the convenience and safety of the elderly in Mumbai Local, Western Railway is going to install a special coach very soon. Under this, these coaches will be installed in 105 non-AC EMU local rakes.
Mumbai Local Trains: Mumbai Local, which is called the lifeline of the city, provides travel facilities to lakhs of passengers every day. Traveling in the crowd has become a routine for the people here. But our senior citizens have to face the most trouble in this crowd. Seats are reserved for senior citizens in the train, but it becomes difficult to reach them during peak hours. Now Western Railway has come up with a solution to this problem.
Mumbai Local will have a separate coach for the elderly
Western Railway has taken a big step keeping in mind the convenience, safety and comfort of elderly passengers. The Railway Board has approved the conversion of the luggage compartment in the 7th coach from the Churchgate end into a ‘Senior Citizen Special Compartment’. The tender process for this change has started and its total estimated cost has been fixed at Rs 5.4 crore.
Changes will be made in 105 local trains
According to Western Railways, this work will be done in 105 non-AC EMU local rakes. One coach in each local train will be reserved exclusively for the elderly. This special coach will have seating facility for 13 passengers and standing space for 91 passengers.
It will have separate doors for boarding and alighting so that senior citizens can travel without any jostling even during peak hours. This change will be implemented in a phased manner and a target has been set to complete it within a year.
Western Railway CPRO Vineet Abhishek informed that, “Railways is taking this important step with the aim of making the journey of senior citizen passengers more safe and comfortable. Under this, one luggage compartment in each train will be converted into a senior citizen special compartment.”
What is the arrangement now?
At present, 14 seats in Mumbai local trains are reserved for senior citizens – 7 seats each in the 3rd and 12th coaches from Churchgate side. But reaching these seats becomes a big challenge for the elderly, especially during rush hours. In such a situation, getting a separate coach will give them a chance to travel with convenience.
