The Malawi Defence Force plane disappeared from the radar after taking off from the capital Lilongwe on Monday morning. The plane was scheduled to land at Mzuzu International Airport in the north of the country just after 10 am local time. The exact cause of the plane’s disappearance is not yet known.
After learning of the incident, Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera cancelled his visit to the Bahamas.
According to the BBC report, Chilima was arrested in 2022 on corruption charges. He was accused of taking money in exchange for giving government contracts. However, last month the court dismissed the charges due to lack of evidence.
