Several major changes have been implemented regarding LPG cylinders, while many more are on the way. Those with PNG connections will have to surrender their LPG cylinders within 30 days, while June 30th is a crucial date for Ujjwala Yojana beneficiaries.
The war between the US and Iran has calmed down, the Strait of Hormuz has opened, and oil and gas ships have resumed their movement. However, in the recent past, amid the oil and gas crisis caused by Middle East tensions, the government has taken several major steps. These included several changes, particularly regarding LPG.
A lot has changed for LPG users during this time, including the implementation of a 30-day rule, while the deadline for completing a crucial task related to gas cylinders under the Ujjwala Yojana also expires on June 30. Let’s explore the impact of these changed rules on LPG customers.
Cylinder surrender rule in 30 days
Let’s first talk about the LPG 30 Days Rule. Households having both LPG and PNG connections will now have to follow the new government rule. Under the revised LPG rules, such customers will have to surrender their LPG cylinder within 30 days of getting the PNG connection. For example, if the PNG connection is installed on June 6, then the LPG connection will have to be surrendered by July 6.
This rule was notified on May 25th under the Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Regulation of Supply and Distribution) Amendment Order, 2026. This move is part of the government’s “One Household, One Gas Connection” initiative. It aims to ensure better availability of LPG in areas that do not yet have piped natural gas (PNG) infrastructure.
This new LPG rule applies to customers of all major LPG distributors , including Indane and Bharat Gas
. Once PNG is operational, consumers will not be permitted to continue purchasing or refilling LPG cylinders for that household. Officials say this move will also help reduce subsidy misuse and ensure that LPG benefits reach the families who truly need it.
However, the new rules also include safeguards for customers who may later move to areas where PNG connections are not available. Customers who surrender their cylinders can receive a transfer voucher that can be used to restore their LPG connection in the future.
The LPG eKYC deadline is nearing.
Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL) has appealed to beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PM Ujjwala Yojana) to complete their eKYC process before June 30. Failure to do so by the deadline could result in a disruption in subsidies for Indane, Bharatgas, and HP gas connections.
Ujjwala customers can complete eKYC through IOCL One mobile app, their LPG distributor or through the delivery person during cylinder delivery.
