A big news related to subsidy for LPG cylinder consumers is coming out. An internal assessment by the government indicates that customers may have to pay up to Rs 1000 for an LPG cylinder. However, what is the government’s view on this, it is not yet completely clear.

According to media reports, the Government of India has discussed the issue of subsidy many times but it has not been able to make any plan yet. If media reports are to be believed, then the government has two options. The first is to supply cylinders without subsidy. Second, some customers should be given the benefit of subsidy.

So far nothing has been said clearly from the government regarding giving subsidy. According to media reports, the rule of 10 lakh income going on till now will be kept in force and the beneficiaries of Ujjwala scheme can get the benefit of subsidy. For the rest, the subsidy may end.

For your information, let us tell you that this scheme was started by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2016. Under this scheme, LPG connections are provided to the families below the poverty line. More than 29 crore people in India have LPG connection. In this, there are about 8.8 crore LPG connections under the Ujjwala scheme. In FY22, the government is planning to add one crore more connections under this scheme.

Know about subsidy status

Last year, a worldwide lockdown was imposed due to the Corona epidemic. At that time there was a sharp fall in the prices of crude oil. This helped the Indian government a lot on the LPG subsidy front as the prices were low and there was no need to change the subsidies. Let us inform that since May 2020, LPG subsidy has stopped in many areas.

How much does the government spend on subsidies?

Explain that during the financial year 2021, the Government of India spent Rs 3,559 crore on subsidy. At the same time, Rs 24,468 crore was spent by the government in the financial year 2020. Actually, the benefit of subsidy is given to the people under the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme. This scheme was started in 2015. To get the gas subsidy, customers have to pay the full price of the LPG cylinder first. After that the subsidy money is refunded by the government to the customer’s bank account. This refund is direct, hence this scheme is called DBT.
