Layoff Update: Oracle has done large scale layoffs in its cloud infrastructure division in India and the US, 10% of the employees have been fired in India. Questions have increased after the meeting with Trump and the OpenAI deal.

Layoff Update: American tech giant Oracle has done large scale layoffs in its Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) division in India and the US. A large number of employees in India have also come under the purview of this layoff. The company has shown the way out to about 10% of the employees in India overnight. There are also reports of Oracle laying off employees in the US and Canada. Although the company has described this as a step taken for “restructuring”, industry experts believe that the layoffs have been done due to Donald Trump’s pressure to reduce offshoring and reduce dependence on H-1B visas.

On August 7, Oracle CEO Larry Wilson met Donald Trump. Recently a big deal has also been signed between OpenAI and Oracle. The special thing is that on one hand the company is recruiting on a large scale in the Virginia office of America, on the other hand it is showing the way out to foreign employees.

India is important for Oracle

India is an important center of Oracle’s global operations. In the year 2024, the company had 28,800 employees in India. Oracle’s total workforce is 162,000. Oracle has long made India a major hub of software development, cloud service and technical support. The sudden layoffs have raised the eyebrows of the employees of the tech industry and there is an atmosphere of panic among them.

After America and India, there is danger in other countries as well

According to the report of Data Center Dynamics, employees have also been fired from Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) teams in the US. There are reports of employees being fired in Canada as well. At the same time, employees in other countries are also being called for management meetings this week. It is feared that in these meetings, employees will be informed about the layoffs. Employees in Mexico have also been served notices, and it is feared that cuts like India may happen here too.

Questions raised after meeting with Trump and OpenAI deal

On August 7, Oracle CEO Larry Wilson met US President Donald Trump at the White House. Issues like domestic recruitment, technology partnerships and national data security were discussed. After this meeting, Oracle and OpenAI signed a major deal to process OpenAI’s data on Oracle’s system.

Job crisis in the tech sector

Companies like Microsoft, Amazon and Meta have already cut thousands of jobs to manage the rising cost of artificial intelligence infrastructure. Oracle also indicated in a regulatory filing in June that the workforce would be restructured from time to time due to strategic changes and performance reasons.
