Kaam ki Baat: If a person dies, what should be done with his PAN and Aadhar card? Today we are telling you what the rules say.

UIDAI Rule For Aadhaar: At present, there are very few people, who know what to do with the official documents i.e. Aadhaar and PAN card after the death of a person. Although this thing is not told to anyone, but UIDAI has made a rule for this also. If a person dies, what should be done with his PAN and Aadhar card? Today we are telling you what the rules say.

Aadhaar card
Aadhar card has become a very important document in today’s time. Whether to take advantage of government scheme or to open an account in any bank, Aadhar card is required everywhere. Please note that since UIDAI is not linked to state death registries, Aadhaar card cannot be updated automatically to reflect death. At the same time, Aadhar card is not necessary for registration and certificate of death, in such a situation it becomes the responsibility of the family members not to let the deceased person’s Aadhar card be misused.

What does the rule say

The legal heirs can get the biometrics of the deceased person locked on the UIDAI website so that the deceased person’s Aadhar card is not misused. However, UIDAI does not have any process to deactivate and cancel the Aadhar card of the deceased person.

Pan card
PAN card is used in financial transactions. PAN card is used for work like filing bank account, demat account, income tax return (ITR). In such a situation, if the PAN card holder dies, then the card can be surrendered to the Income Tax Department. The legal heir has to write an application to the Assessing Officer (AO) to surrender the PAN card.

What to give in the application form
In the application form, the reason for surrendering the PAN card, name, PAN and date of birth of the deceased person, a copy of his death certificate will have to be given. To which AO you have to submit this application, information about it will be available on the e-filing website of the Income Tax Department. Although this process is not mandatory, if you feel that there may be a need for a PAN card, then you can keep it with you.
