Income Tax Return filing for AY22: Individual taxpayers whose taxable income is more than Rs 2.5 lakh are required to file ITR. An important document for filing return is 26AS (Form 26AS).


Income Tax Return: The last date for filing Income Tax Return (ITR) for the assessment year 2021-22 (AY22) is 31 December 2021. Individual taxpayers whose taxable income is more than Rs 2.5 lakh are required to file ITR. The most important document for filing return is 26AS (Form 26AS). It can be downloaded from the website of Taxpayer Income Tax.

What is Form 26AS?

Form 26AS is a consolidated tax statement. It contains the details of tax deduction from different sources of income of the taxpayer. For example, details like tax deduction at source (TDS), tax collection at source (TCS), advance tax or self-assessment tax paid, regular tax, refund are included. Form 26AS can also be downloaded from the e-filing account on the Income Tax website.

Before filing the return, it is important that you combine your income in Form 26AS and Form 16/16A. Form 16/Form 16A is also known as TDS certificate. Form 16 gives complete details of tax deducted from salary while Form 16A gives details of TDS deducted on income other than salary. Form 16 is provided by the employer to the employee.

How to download Form 26AS

  • Click on the Income Tax website (incometax.gov.in) and ‘Login’ to your account.
  • Here go to ‘e-file’ and click on ‘View Form 26 AS (Tax Credit)’ link.
  • After reading the disclaimer, click on the ‘Confirm’ button.
  • Now you will be redirected to TDS-CPC website.
  • Here you have to click on ‘Proceed’ option.
  • Then go to the option ‘View Tax Credit (Form 26AS)’.
  • Select assessment year and select ‘view type’ (HTML, Text or PDF).
  • After that you click on ‘View/Download’.
  • Now you can download and save Form 26AS.
  • Keep these documents ready for ITR filing
  • Interest certificate from the bank (Form 15G/15H)
  • Dividend income details
  • Interest proof if you have taken home loan
  • Proof of Tax Saving Investments
