ITR filling deadline extended again! The government will again extend the deadline for filing returns? know these are the 5 big reasons

ITR filling 2025: The deadline for filing ITR for the financial year 2024-25 is September 15, 2025. Taxpayers and tax professionals are demanding the government to extend the deadline again. Know what is the reason for this.

ITR filling 2025: The deadline for filing ITR for the financial year 2024-25 (assessment year 2025-26) is September 15, 2025. Now less than 1 month is left for this. As this deadline is approaching, the anxiety of taxpayers and tax professionals is also increasing.

The Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) and many tax experts across the country have requested the government to extend the deadline for filing ITR. They say that in the current situation, taxpayers and chartered accountants will not be able to file returns on time.

Arguments in favour of extending the deadline

GCCI, in a letter to CBDT (Central Board of Direct Taxes), said that taxpayers and professionals are facing many practical problems. Some of the major reasons for this are:

Late release of ITR utilities and forms.

  • Technical problems such as system errors, log-in failures, and timeouts.
  • Discrepancies and delay in updates in Form 26AS, AIS and TIS.
  • Process getting longer due to implementation of new financial detail format.
  • Impact of festivals coming between August to November.

GCCI has recommended extending the last date for non-audit tax cases to October 30, 2025.

What are the problems faced by tax professionals?

Many chartered accountants and tax practitioners say that uploading returns has become quite challenging due to glitches on the portal. Many times errors occur after uploading the return or the data is not updated. This makes it difficult to file on time.

The deadline was extended in May

In May this year, the government extended the last date for filing ITR from July 31 to September 15, 2025. At that time, the CBDT had said that major changes have been made in the ITR form and rules, due to which taxpayers had very little time left. Therefore, the deadline for filing returns has been extended.

What can the government do next?

Now after the demand of GCCI and tax professionals to extend the deadline, the ball is in the government’s court. Currently, the last date for filing ITR is 15 September 2025. But, seeing the kind of difficulties being faced in filing ITR, the government may consider extending the deadline.
