If an income tax payer comes to know after filing the Income Tax Return (ITR) that he has made a mistake or has given wrong information while filing the ITR return, then he can rectify his mistake.


New Delhi. For the income tax payers whose accounts are not to be audited, the deadline for filing income tax returns has passed on July 31. Although everyone is very careful while filing income tax return, but many people make some mistakes. These may include quoting wrong bank account number, forgetting to declare interest income or claiming wrong deduction etc.

If an income tax payer comes to know after filing the income tax return that he has made any mistake or has given wrong information while filing the ITR return, then he can rectify his mistake. Such that Revised ITR Under Section 139(5) of the Income Tax Act, 1961, taxpayers get an opportunity to rectify their mistakes by filing a revised income tax return. Therefore, if you have also made a mistake while filing ITR, then you do not need to worry. You can file Revised ITR.

Revised ITR also has to be verified

If you are also revising ITR then you have to keep in mind that you have to verify it. If you do not verify the Revised ITR then the Income Tax Department will not accept it and your Revised ITR will be invalid. You will have to amend your ITR by visiting the Income Tax Department website.

This is the way to rectify the mistake in ITR

Visit the Income Tax Department website https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/.
Go to the e-file menu and click on the Rectification link.
Here select ‘Order/Intimation to be rectified’ and assessment year from the dropdown list. Then click on Continue.
Now select the request type from the dropdown list. Such as Tax Credit Mismatch Correction Only or Return Data Correction. Select the one that applies to you.
After updating the information click on submit.
A success message will appear and a related mail will also be sent to your registered e-mail id.

You can also see the status

You can also get information about whether the amendment you have made in your ITR to rectify the mistake has happened or not. For this you have to visit the official site of Income Tax Department https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/. Then go to the My Account menu and click on ‘View e-Filed Returns/Forms’. Here select the Rectification Status from the dropdown list and click on submit. The status will come in front of you.
