A user named Sunil Verma wrote on Twitter, “Site is not working. Similarly, a Twitter handle named Vijesh Suthar wrote, I called the Income Tax Office regarding portal related issues, but the executive replied that his Income Tax Portal is also showing loading messages for the last 10 minutes.

It was informed on Wednesday by the Twitter handle of the Income Tax Department that till July 26, 3.4 crore ITRs have been filed. 30 lakh ITRs were filed on 26 July. The last date to file ITR is 31st July. If you have not filed ITR yet, fill it to avoid late fees.

According to media reports, a fine ranging from Rs 1 thousand to Rs 5 thousand can be imposed under section 234F of the Income Tax Act 1961 for filing ITR after July 31.


Government is not considering extending the deadline
Let us tell you that the government is not considering to extend the deadline of July 31 for filing income tax returns. It believes that most returns will be filed by the due date. Last Friday, Revenue Secretary Tarun Bajaj had said that till July 20, more than 2.3 crore income tax returns have been filed for the financial year 2021-22 and this number is increasing continuously.

5.89 crore ITRs were filed last year

It is noteworthy that about 5.89 crore income tax returns were filed for the last financial year 2020-21. Last year, the government extended the deadline for filing returns till December 31. Bajaj had said, “People think that the deadline for filing income tax returns increases every time. That’s why they show some slowness in filing returns initially. But we are getting returns between 15 lakh to 18 lakh daily. This will increase to 25 to 30 lakh returns on a daily basis.

The revenue secretary said, “Earlier 50,000 people used to file income tax returns daily and now this number has increased to 20 lakh. I am sure the number of returns will increase in the next few days….”
