IPL 2020: CSK batsman Suresh Raina to miss entire tournament, returns home

Chennai Super Kings’ batsman Suresh Raina will miss the entire IPL for personal reasons. He has returned to India from the UAE.

Chennai Super Kings on Saturday confirmed that their vice-captain Suresh Raina will miss the entire IPL 2020 after opting to return home due to “personal reasons”.



“Suresh Raina has returned to India for personal reasons and will be unavailable for the remainder of the IPL season. Chennai Super Kings offers complete support to Suresh and his family during this time,” team CEO Kasi Viswanathan said in a tweet from the Super Kings handle.

 

Raina, who announced his international retirement on August 15, traveled with the CSK squad to Dubai on August 21 and was in 7-days quarantine as per the BCCI SOPs.

Raina along with MS Dhoni, Deepak Chahar, Piyush Chawla, Kedar Jadhav had attended Chennai Super Kings’s training camp ahead of IPL 2020. Dhoni and Raina, who were at the Chennai Super Kings camp when they announced their retirements were congratulated by their teammates in the dressing room afterward.

Raina’s absence comes as another blow for the Chennai Super Kings from which at least 10 members – including an India player – tested positive for coronavirus after a test on Thursday.



Earlier, Raina had said he is blessed to have received love and support from fans in Chennai during the Indian Premier League (IPL). Raina said the monickers were given to him and MS Dhoni by CSK fans is something he will cherish for the rest of his life.

Suresh Raina is fondly called as ‘Chinna Thala’ by CSK fans while MS Dhoni is revered as ‘Thala’ in the IPL. CSK have sure ‘Thala’ and ‘Chinna Thala’ have a part of the emotional connection fans have with the 3-time champions.
