According to media reports, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said in Parliament that at present there is no proposal to restore the exemption or concessions given to certain categories of people in ticket fare. The Railway Minister said that in view of Kovid, the concession given for all categories of passengers was withdrawn and no consideration has been given to reinstate it yet.

Exemption was withdrawn during Corona

Lockdown was imposed across the country due to Corona epidemic. Just before this, the exemption given in rail fare was withdrawn from 20 March 2020 till further orders. However, four categories of persons with disabilities, 11 categories of patients and students are still getting exemption.

How much discount did senior citizens get?

Significantly, in all trains of Indian Railways, senior citizens used to get a concession of up to 50 percent on the first tickets of Corona. Men above the age of 60 and women above the age of 58 years are kept in the category of senior citizens in the Railways. Before the Corona period, in all Mail Express trains including Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto, men were given 40 percent discount on base fare and women 50 percent in base fare.
