Indian Railways: The Indian Railways is the lifeline for millions of people every day. New initiatives like M-UTS will not only help manage congestion but also provide convenient and faster service to passengers.
If successful, this initiative could be implemented nationwide in the future. India has one of the world’s largest railway networks. Over 20 million passengers travel on Indian Railways every day. This number increases further during the festive season. On occasions like Dussehra, Diwali, and Chhath, huge crowds of passengers gather at stations.
Long queues form at ticket counters, especially for general tickets, often waiting for hours. Now, Northern Railway has found a solution to this problem. There will be no need to stand in long queues or rush to the counter for general tickets. Instead, the ticket will be delivered to you automatically. Northern Railway Lucknow Division is launching a new facility called M-UTS (Mobile – Unreserved Ticketing System).
Under this system, railway employees will now roam the station platforms selling tickets to passengers, much like hawkers do. This means that if you’re in a hurry to catch a train and are worried about the crowded counters, there’s no need to worry. You can buy your ticket directly from a railway employee standing on the platform.
How will the new ticketing system work?
The M-UTS is a small and lightweight mobile machine, similar to the ticket machines used on roadways buses. It doesn’t require wires and can be easily carried to the platform. Railway staff will instantly issue your ticket using this machine. This will be especially beneficial for passengers who need to travel quickly and avoid the crowds at the counter.
You can also make payments through UPI
Most importantly, you’ll have both cash and UPI payment options. This means that even if you don’t have change, you can still get your ticket instantly using digital payment. Uniformed railway personnel will approach you, carrying an M-UTS machine. You’ll tell them your destination, and they’ll print the ticket from the machine and hand it to you.
Will this facility start here first?
Northern Railway has launched this scheme in the first phase at four major stations. These include Lucknow Charbagh, Ayodhya, Varanasi, and Prayagraj Junction. Ten machines each will be provided in Lucknow, Ayodhya, and Varanasi, while five machines will be provided in Prayagraj. This means the scheme is being launched with a total of 35 machines. It will be expanded to more stations in the future. This facility will prove especially useful during festivals, when crowds can cause chaos at ticket counters. Now, passengers will be able to stand comfortably on the platform with their families, and railway personnel will personally approach them to collect tickets.
