Indian Railways Rules: Train ticket booking is going to increase rapidly during the festive season. Many passengers book tickets from the IRCTC app or portal well in advance to go home on special occasions like Diwali and Chhath. But many times tickets have to be cancelled at the last moment due to emergency. Such as not getting leave, change in travel date, ticket remaining in waiting list or train getting cancelled.

In such a situation, it is important that every passenger knows the rules related to ticket cancellation and refund. Let us know what are the rules for cancelling the ticket and how much refund you will get.

What are the rules for cancelling a ticket?

  • Tickets booked through IRCTC app or portal can be cancelled online. After this, you will get the refund as per the rules set by the railways.
  • If a confirmed ticket is cancelled more than 48 hours before the scheduled departure of the train, a charge of Rs 240 + GST will be levied for Executive Class and Rs 180 + GST for AC Chair Car.
  • If the ticket is cancelled 12 hours before 48 hours, a fee of 25% of the fare will be charged for all AC classes. This fee will be in addition to the minimum cancellation charge and GST.
  • If the ticket is cancelled between 12 hours and 4 hours before departure, 50% of the fare will be charged for all AC classes. This will also be applicable along with minimum cancellation charge and GST.
  • If the ticket is not cancelled or online TDR is not filed till 4 hours before the departure of the train, then no refund will be given on such confirmed tickets.

Rules for cancelling waiting tickets

If a waiting ticket is cancelled online, the railways will refund you Rs 20 + GST per passenger. But, the condition is that the ticket is cancelled 4 hours before the departure of the train. If the ticket is still in waiting list after the first chart is prepared, the passenger does not need to cancel it. It will be cancelled automatically and the entire refund will be credited back to the account without any deduction.

Rules for cancellation of partially confirmed tickets

If on a party e-ticket or family e-ticket, some passengers have confirmed tickets and the rest are in waiting list, then the rules are different. In this case, if the ticket is cancelled or TDR is filed 4 hours before the departure of the train, the confirmed passengers will also get a full fare refund, but Rs 20 + GST will be deducted per passenger.

If the ticket is cancelled after the first chart is prepared and up to 30 minutes before the departure of the train, the confirmed passengers will get a full refund without any deduction. It is worth noting that now the first reservation chart is prepared 8 hours before the departure of the train.

Rules if the train is late by more than 3 hours

If the train is delayed by more than 3 hours from its scheduled time and the passenger does not travel, all passengers with fully or partially confirmed tickets will be refunded the full fare without any charge.
