Indian Railway Tatkal Ticket Booking: Indian Railways has made a major change for passengers purchasing Tatkal tickets. Now, when purchasing an Tatkal ticket from the counter, an OTP (one-time password) will be sent to your mobile number. The ticket will be issued only after providing this information. This means that no one will be able to issue a ticket without the passenger’s mobile number. This decision was specifically taken to curb the ongoing malpractices of touts.

The Railways first implemented this as a trial on select trains and received positive results. After making Aadhaar linking mandatory for online Tatkal tickets in July, the same strictness is now being implemented for offline counter tickets. The Railways says that this system will be implemented on all trains across the country in the next few days.

How to get a new counter Tatkal ticket?

Now, when a passenger submits a reservation form at the counter, they will be required to enter their mobile number. If the booking is on Tatkal, an OTP will be sent to the passenger’s phone upon submission. The counter clerk will enter this OTP into the system, and only then will the ticket be confirmed. If the OTP is incorrect or not provided, the ticket will not be issued.

Why was this change made?

Often, touts would obtain large numbers of Tatkal tickets, leaving needy passengers without genuine tickets. Now, since tickets will only be issued using an OTP sent to the mobile number, touts will be unable to use fake numbers. The Railways hopes that this will ensure that Tatkal tickets are available to passengers who truly need them.
