Indian Railway: Data obtained through Right to Information (RTI) shows that Railways gets huge revenue from ticket cancellation. According to the data, Railways has earned Rs 1,229 crore from canceled waiting list tickets between 2021 and 2024. This data was shared by the Railway Ministry in response to an RTI application filed by Madhya Pradesh activist Vivek Pandey. These are indicating continuous growth.
According to the RTI response, a total of 2.53 crore waiting list tickets were canceled in 2021 and the Railways’ earnings have been shown to be Rs 242.68 crore. A total of 4.6 crore tickets were canceled in 2022 and the earnings increased to Rs 439 crore. Similarly, in 2023, Railways earned Rs 505 crore out of total 5.36 crore canceled tickets and if we talk about 2024, it earned Rs 43 crore out of 45.86 lakh canceled tickets in January itself.
The total number of cancellations was highest between November 5, 2023 and November 17, 2023 (i.e. during Diwali week). Railways then canceled 96.18 lakh tickets, which included their confirmed, reservation against cancellation (RC) and waitlisted tickets. Railways earned ₹10.37 crore as ‘total cancellation income’ from all tickets.

- ₹200/- for AC 2 Tier/First Class
- ₹180 for AC 3 Tier/AC Chair Car/AC 3 Economy
- ₹120/- for sleeper class
- ₹60/- for second category
